Personal Development at Hyde Park Schools

At Hyde Park Schools, we are committed to nurturing the whole child. Our Personal Development curriculum is designed to help every pupil grow into a confident, resilient, and responsible individual, ready for the challenges of a fast-changing world. We believe that personal growth is just as important as academic achievement.

    Our Approach to Learning

Our PSHRE (Personal, Social, Health, Relationships and Economic) curriculum incorporates Relationships and Health Education. It aims to develop essential life skills, such as resilience, self-esteem, teamwork, and critical thinking. We use an enquiry-based model, with each week's learning centred on a "big question" that encourages children to delve deeper into topics. This approach helps pupils to understand how to stay safe in their relationships and in the wider world, and to develop an understanding of what it means to be physically and mentally healthy.

Alongside our computing curriculum, our PSHRE lessons empower pupils to be safe and responsible digital citizens. We teach them about different forms of media, their impact, and how to navigate online content with confidence.

    Our Commitment to British Values

Our school is dedicated to promoting fundamental British values and encouraging our pupils to be positive, active members of our community.

    • Individual Liberty: We empower children to make choices and understand the consequences, giving them roles and responsibilities such as School Council representatives, monitors, and play leaders.
    • The Rule of Law: Our pupils learn about rules and their importance through classroom discussions, links with local emergency services, and our school's behaviour policy.
    • Mutual Respect and Tolerance: We celebrate our diverse school family and promote kindness and understanding. We encourage positive relationships and teach children to value individual differences, with a focus on anti-bullying and team building.
    • Democracy: We promote democracy by giving pupils a voice in school life through pupil questionnaires and the democratic election of our School Council.
    Our Activities in Action

We believe that personal development should be a hands-on experience. Here are just a few examples of activities that bring our values to life:

    • The Alliance System: At the heart of our school community, our Alliance System fosters a strong sense of belonging and friendly competition. All pupils are assigned to one of our four alliances, which are named after local rivers:

Meavy (Yellow) 🟡, Lynher (Green) 🟢, Tamar (Blue) 🔵, and Plym (Red) 🔴.

    • Pupils work together to earn points throughout the year, culminating in our annual Sports Day.
    • Aspiration in Action: Our classes are named after inspirational historical figures, and pupils learn about these people to understand how values like bravery, curiosity, and optimism can lead to great achievements.
    • Clubs and Out-of-Hours Activities: We offer a wide range of clubs, both run by school staff and external agencies, to provide pupils with opportunities to explore new interests, from sports to creative arts.
    • Vibrant Curriculum: We ensure our curriculum is vibrant and alive through a commitment to include a school trip, a visitor, or an on-site experience every term.
    • Community Links: Our schools have strong links with the local community, and we actively involve parents and local groups in our school life to enrich our pupils' experiences.
